About

Backed with 500 years of experience in education, the University of Aberdeen remains one of the most internationally distinguished universities in the UK. It has consistently ranked in the top 1% of the world’s universities according to various league tables.

The University of Aberdeen is also associated with five Nobel Laureates with various works in life and natural sciences. Some of the more notable alumni of the University include Thomas Reid known for his contribution to the Scottish Enlightenment; Alistair Carmichael, Secretary of State for Scotland; and Skënder Hyseni, first Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, among others. The University has also awarded honorary degrees to several high profile personalities such as Denis Law, Richard Dawkins and best-selling author, J.K. Rowling.

At present, the University is composed of two major campuses. Together, these two campuses educate more than 13,000 students and offer 600+ first degree programs across three colleges:

  • Arts and Social Sciences
  • Physical Sciences
  • Life Sciences and Medicine

Old Aberdeen, a sprawling 35-hectare campus located 2 miles from the city centre, is the “historical heart” of the University. It houses the majority of the University’s buildings and student facilities. On this site you will find the Sir Duncan Rice Library, Aberdeen Sports Village, the Aquatics Centre and the student’s union.
