Studying Child Nursing

Topics Covered

During each year of study students will be taught modules through a series of lectures and seminars, and are expected to undertake independent studies and work placements to reflect their learning. In the first year of study students will learn about the fundamentals of nursing, principles of professional practice, understanding health and social care, and will also be introduced to child nursing. In the second year of study students will be required to study modules such as applied sciences for health and well-being, acute health care, and therapeutic nursing care. In the final year of study students are introduced to the more complex needs and enhanced care methods for children, and will be transitioned into registering as a professional nurse.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements to child nursing courses vary depending on the university you are making an application to. The best universities for child nursing courses are Keele University, Huddersfield University, Bradford University, Edge Hill University and The University of Nottingham. Entry requirements to these institutions are generally higher due to the high quality of teaching and increased applications, with the A Level entry requirements being grades ABB – BBB. Other entry requirements must also be considered such as 5 GCSE Grade C or above to include Maths, English and Science. Some universities also require students to undertake an application interview. You are advised to contact the institution you are applying to for a full breakdown of entry requirements.

Career Prospects

Upon completion of child nursing courses, graduates usually work directly in the field. Positions are available as child nurses within hospitals, neonatal wards, paediatric intensive care wards, and children’s hospices. It is also possible to specialise your career in children’s nursing throughout career progression.
