Exercise and Fitness Management BSc (Hons)

Overview

Do you want to turn your interest in exercise and fitness into a rewarding career?

On this BSc (Hons) Exercise and Fitness Management degree course, you’ll build scientific understanding and managerial skills that’ll set you up as a professional in fitness management, personal training or nutrition. You'll also have the skills to work in sports event management and sports science or set up your own business in the health sector.

What you'll experience:

  • Develop knowledge in anatomy, physiology and management and specialise in areas that interest you most
  • Make the most of our gym and fitness studios and use specialist facilities such as our motion capture systems to evaluate the technique of exercise
  • Learn from industry experts and staff who are accredited by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)
  • Have the opportunity to work with sports clubs and organise and market events in the local community such as the Great South Run
  • Develop your CV, by adding REPs professional qualifications alongside your studies

What you'll study:

Each module on this course is worth a certain number of credits.

In each year, you need to study modules worth a total of 120 credits. For example, 4 modules worth 20 credits and 1 module worth 40 credits.

(This may be different if you're studying this course part time.)

Year 1

Core modules in this year include:

  • Introduction to Sport and Exercise Biomechanics
  • Introduction to Sport and Exercise Physiology
  • Introduction to Sport, Business and Management

Year 2

Core modules in this year include:

  • Nutrition for Sport, Exercise and Health
  • Preparing Research, Innovation or Enterprise Projects
  • Sports Business Management
  • Strength and Conditioning for Sport, Exercise and Health

Options to choose from in this year currently include:

  • Advanced Exercise Physiology
  • Biomechanics of Sport and Exercise
  • Physical Activity and Exercise for Healthy Ageing
  • Sports Facility Management

You'll also have the option to undertake the REPs Level 2 Gym Instructor vocational qualification.

Placement year (optional)

On this course, you can choose an optional placement year between your 2nd and 3rd year of studies or after your 3rd year.

During the study abroad placement year, you'll experience life at a university in another country. Alternatively, you can spend a year developing your experience in industry in the UK or abroad with the work placement year.

We’ll help you secure a work placement that fits your situation and ambitions. You’ll get mentoring and support throughout the year.

Year 3

  • Advanced Strength and Conditioning
  • Project

Options to choose from in this year currently include:

  • Applications of Exercise Physiology
  • Biomechanics in Practice
  • Introduction to Teaching
  • Marketing and Promotion of Sport
  • Professional Development
  • Sport Entrepreneurship and Business Venturing

You'll also have the option to undertake the REPs Level 3 Personal Trainer vocational qualification.

How you're assessed

You’ll be assessed through:

  • exams
  • essays
  • client reports
  • individual and group presentations
  • practical exercises
  • business reports

You’ll be able to test your skills and knowledge informally before you do assessments that count towards your final mark.

You can get feedback on all practice and formal assessments so you can improve in the future.

The way you’re assessed may depend on the modules you select. As a guide, students on this course last year were typically assessed as follows:

  • Year 1 students: 40% by written exams, 7% by practical exams and 53% by coursework
  • Year 2 students: 17% by written exams, 32% by practical exams and 51% by coursework
  • Year 3 students: 12% by written exams, 30% by practical exams and 58% by coursework

The business skills you will develop on this course also allow you to work in areas such as event management consultancy or set up your own business in the health sector. You'll be set to do postgraduate study in exercise and sport science or management too.

Entry Requirements For This Course

112 points to include a minimum of 2 A levels, or equivalent.

English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0 with no component score below 5.5.
