Overview

This MEng Innovation Engineering integrated Master’s degree course is for people with big ideas and a desire to make them a reality. If you think we can tackle global problems with engineering and clever technology, this is the course for you.

You’ll develop skills in mechanical, electronic, design and materials engineering and alongside communication, entrepreneurial and leadership skills.

As a Master in innovation engineering, you’ll be prepared for solving problems that impact society. You could work in areas such as visualisation and data management, medical and allied health, and industrial and scientific research.

On this degree course, you’ll:

  • Learn to make key decisions on the best ways to solve such complex and demanding global challenges
  • Make use of our Future Technology Centre, including 3D simulation, manufacturing and visualisation facilities

What you'll study 

Each module on this course is worth a certain number of credits.

In each year, you need to study modules worth a total of 120 credits. For example, 4 modules worth 20 credits and 1 module worth 40 credits.

Year 1

Core modules in this year include:

  • Design and Materials in Engineering
  • Environmental Challenges with Innovation Opportunities

There are no optional modules in this year.

Year 2

Core modules in this year include:

  • Business Innovation
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulations
  • Robotics and Artificial Intelligence
  • Structural Modelling with Computer Aided Design (CAD)

There are no optional modules in this year.

Placement year

After your second year, you can do an optional work placement year to get valuable longer-term work experience in the industry.

Previous students have completed work placements at:

  • Tulip

Many students go on to work for their placement employer after the course.

We’ll help you secure a work placement that fits your aspirations. You’ll get mentoring and support throughout the year.

  • MEng Individual Project

Year 4

Core modules in this year include:

  • Advanced Surface Engineering
  • Information Technology and Strategic Management
  • Multidisciplinary Group Project
  • Structural Bioengineering

You'll undertake two design projects and an independent research project linked to one of our specialist research areas, including:

  • Composite Optimisation and Analysis
  • Innovation, Product Development and Leadership
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Advanced CADCAM
  • Design for Manufacture
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Humanitarian)
  • Extreme Sports Research and Development
  • Non Destructive Testing, Principles and Applications
  • Biomechanics
  • Social Entrepreneurship and Innovative Environmental Technologies
  • Advanced Sustainable Energy Systems

Teaching

Teaching methods on this course include:

You'll also use facilities for Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL), which is an alternative to the traditional lecture-style learning. This makes it easier for you to collaborate with other students and take part in team-based problem solving.

How you're assessed

You’ll be assessed through:

  • multiple choice tests
  • essays
  • written exams
  • mini projects
  • presentations
  • review articles
  • supervised work sessions

You’ll be able to test your skills and knowledge informally before you do assessments that count towards your final mark.

You can get feedback on all practice and formal assessments so you can improve in the future.

The way you’re assessed may depend on the modules you select. As a guide, students on this course last year were typically assessed as follows:

  • Year 1 students: 84% by written exams and 16% by coursework
  • Year 2 students: 56% by written exams, 13% by practical exams and 31% by coursework
  • Year 3 students: 60% by written exams and 40% by coursework
  • Year 4 students: 42% by written exams, 5% by practical exams and 53% by coursework

As well as building your technical knowledge, this course enhances your communication, entrepreneurial and leadership skills.

This gives you the foundation for a career in global organisations, tech start-ups, government departments and specialist agencies in areas such as consumer and professional electronics, robotics, defence, broadcasting and telecommunications.

Entry Requirements For This Course

120-144 points to include a minimum of 3 A levels, or equivalent, with 40 points from Mathematics.

English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0 with no component score below 5.5.
