Fashion Degrees

Fashion is the term used to describe the varying tastes and styles that permeate throughout clothing garment design and the industries surrounding fashion are exciting and creative sectors to work in.

Studying Fashion

A fashion degree is usually taken alongside other creative subject such as textiles, design or marketing, and is awarded as a Bachelor of Arts Degree. A fashion degree can take between three and four years of full time study, with the additional year being an optional placement year/ study abroad year in the industry.

Topics Covered

In the first year of study, students can expect to learn some core modules such as fashion drawing, research methods, garment construction and creative cutting. During the second year of study students will develop their existing skills and study new modules such as pattern cutting methods, diverse consumer markets, computer fashion imaging, and portfolio building. In the final year of study you will be required to undertake an independent study, usually of your own choice, which should showcase the skills and knowledge you have gained over the course. You will also be required to undertake some key modules such as accessory design and embroidery.

Entry Requirements

Fashion degrees are obtained through university level courses, although there are multiple colleges and institutions in the UK that offer fashion courses at other levels. Entrance to a fashion degree will vary depending on the university you are applying to, and how high the university is ranked.

To gain entry to these courses at these universities you will need to have gained three A Level grades ABB – BBB and be able to present some previous academic experience within fashion and/or design. You are advised to contact the institution you are applying to for a full breakdown of entry requirements.

Career Prospects

After completing a fashion degree, students are able to gain graduate roles in the multiple sectors linked to the fashion industry such as sales, production of garments, marketing, PR and merchandising. Specific job roles can include fashion forecaster, fashion designer, textile designer, fashion marketer, fashion buyer, and fashion merchandiser.

There is also the opportunity for fashion graduates to leave an undergraduate degree and go on to study a master’s degree in fashion. This type of degree can take up to twelve months of full time study to complete.
