Strong links exist with other groups in Aberystwyth. The Aberystwyth Bio Centre (ABC) brings together the research facilities of the Institute of Rural Sciences, the Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS) and the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER). Staff from IGER, along with those from ADAS Pwllpeiran, contribute substantially to the teaching base. The taught postgraduate courses on offer also benefit from visiting authorities from a range of other commercial and research organisations. The quality of the educational experience is enhanced by visits to outside laboratories, farms and research establishments. Both the University and the town of Aberystwyth are richly cosmopolitan in nature, and the Institute welcomes students from across the world who benefit considerably from the opportunities to learn from each other’s experiences as well as from academic staff.
The specific research interests of staff within the Institute tend to be in the more applied areas of rural sciences, although these are complemented by the more fundamental and strategic science research interests of staff within ABC. Such links can and do, impact upon the quality of postgraduate research opportunities. Indeed, there is a successful history of jointly supervised research students based within complementary organisations, but registered for higher degrees within this Institute.
