A large and vibrant postgraduate community is viewed as a key component of the Institute’s research excellence. We have seen more than 90 completed PhDs since 1996, and currently have some 24 full-time research students in residence, including 9 funded by research councils. The Institute receives studentships from ESRC, NERC, EPSRC and U.W.A.. in addition to funding our own studentships. At present, all of our current full-time PhD students receive full studentships, including all fees. Research students are regarded as full members of the research groups, participate in seminars and reading groups and have access to research group funds and equipment. Postgraduates are encouraged to engage with academic debate through peer-reviewed papers and by presenting papers at conferences in the UK and abroad. Facilities to support Institute research students include two large postgraduate work areas, together with smaller, more specialised work spaces attached to Research Group laboratories, and individual rooms for most of our third year students. All doctoral students are provided with their own PC.
