The MA in Historical Studies is designed to offer both a rewarding scheme of study in its own right, and the requisite research training as defined by the funding bodies for those wishing to progress beyond a taught Master’s course to the PhD. The first modules provide appropriate training in the skills and sources of the research historian, and are followed by a choice of broad thematic courses and specialist options relating to a particular period or area. The MA is then completed by writing a dissertation. There are several alternative pathways through the MA, providing for varied chronological, geographical and thematic interests; these include the following: Medieval Britain, Early Modern History, Political Culture in Modern Britain since 1850, Political Culture in Modern Europe since 1848-1945, Heritage Skills.
