About us

With the rapid advances in technologies and the growth of international terrorism, the kinds of crime and security problems we face today are very different from those of twenty years ago and they continue to change. New problems require new solutions. We need to develop sophisticated analytic techniques and evidenced based strategies to understand, detect and counter crime and security vulnerabilities.

Through its teaching, research and public engagement, the UCL Department of Security and Crime Science is dedicated to responding to the changing face of crime and insecurity in the 21st century.

In 2016 we will launch our undergraduate degree. The BSc Security and Crime Science will provide students with a thorough understanding of how science and scientifically based techniques can deliver sustainable and often immediate reductions in crime and other threats to security.

The course will focus on how to apply science to understand better crime and security problems, and develop strategies for reducing such problems. It will outline the philosophical and theoretical bases for this approach and explore its application to a range of crime and security problems.

Our postgraduate courses in Crime Science, Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism, and Crime and Forensic Sciences are similarly built on a commitment to thinking scientifically, bringing disciplines together, and having real world impact.

Also new for 2017-18 is the MSc Policing, created for security professionals and serving police officers to enable them be effective leaders and managers of a modern diverse police service.

Our teaching is informed by our rigorous, applied research. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 84% of our submission was judged to be world leading or internationally excellent, and 100% of our submissions were rated as world leading in terms of their impact on society.
