Urban and Regional Planning BA (Hons)

Have you ever wondered how the place you live developed? Or about who makes the decisions regarding what type of development takes place and where?


The BA (Hons) Urban and Regional Planning is a three-year degree which will provide you with a basic academic and professional training in planning. You will consider the issues faced by professionals in dealing with the planning and management of all aspects of our built and natural environments.

The course is partially accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and you can continue your vocational training by progressing to a variety of RTPI accredited master's at The University of Manchester.

Manchester is a great place to study planning; it was the world's first industrial city and is now a vibrant 21st century metropolis. It is a place of major urban change with plenty of scope to explore urban development pressures and environmental impact. In contrast, Manchester is surrounded by a wide variety of rural environments, including three spectacular national parks and varied environmental initiatives.

Entry Requirements For This Course

A-level

Grades ABB. General Studies is accepted.
We do not require a pass in the Science Practical Assessment.

Duration of A-level study

The University welcomes applications from applicants who have either sat their examinations early or have followed an accelerated curriculum and spent three years studying A-levels where the examinations have been taken over two years. For those studying an advanced curriculum where the examinations are spread over three years, consideration for an offer will be at the discretion of the admissions tutor for that subject.

AS-level

Two AS Levels not accepted in place on one A Level.

Unit grade information

The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit grade information which, like all other available information, will inform the consideration of applications. Unit grades will not normally form part of offer conditions, except for Mathematics programmes.

GCSE

Minimum grade C in English Language and Mathematics (Grade 4 or above in the newly reformed GCSEs in England).
We do not accepted applied GCSE mathematics courses.

Key Skills qualification

The University warmly welcomes applications from students studying the Key Skills qualification. However, as the opportunities to take these modules are not open to all applicants, currently this is not an essential requirement of the University.

International Baccalaureate

32 points overall. 6,5,5 at Higher Level.

English language

Students whose first language or language of instruction is not English may be asked to provide evidence of fluency in English by achieving scores in English language tests as follows: An overall score of 6.5 at IELTS, with 6.5 in writing and no sub-section below 6.0; TOEFL iBT overall score of 90 with a minimum score of 22 in writing and 20 in the other sub-sections, Pearson PTE overall score of 59 with a minimum score of 59 in writing and 51 in the other subsections or Cambridge CAE or Cambridge CPE grade C (Please note that the Cambridge First Certificate in English is not acceptable.)

English language test validity

Some English language test results are only valid for two years. Your English language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.

Scottish Advanced Highers

Grades A, B, B.

Welsh Baccalaureate

Grade A in the advanced core plus BB in the A level options.
Or
Grade B in the advanced core plus AB in the A level options.

European Baccalaureate

Acceptable on its own or in combination with other qualifications. Applications from students studying for this qualification are welcome and all such applicants will be considered on an individual basis. Overall grades of 75- 80%.

AQA Baccalaureate

We welcome the AQA Baccalaureate - offers will be made on the basis of the A-level components. See A-level section for subject and grade requirements.

Other international entry requirements

BTEC Extended Diploma

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma with a minimum of 70 credits awarded at Distinction, 100 at Merit and the remaining 10 credits at Pass or above.
BTEC Level 3 Diploma with a minimum of 110 credits awarded at Merit and 10 credits at Pass plus A at A level.
BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma with a minimum grade of Distinction plus BB at A level.

Access to HE Diploma

Applications are considered on an individual basis. Overall, 60 credits overall with 45 at level 3 15 Distinction and 24 Merit.

Advanced Placement tests

The University welcomes applicants with the AP qualification. Such applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Cambridge Pre-U

Grades D3, M1, M1

Advanced/Progression Diploma

All Advanced Diplomas except for Hair & Beauty Studies, Hospitality, Creative & Media are acceptable. Grade C plus ASL Grade C required.

Non-standard educational routes

If you have followed a non-standard educational route and have been, for example, educated at home, your application will be considered against the standard entry criteria of the course to which you applied. You will be required to demonstrate that you meet the academic entry requirements as specified for the course. We will also require a reference which should be written by somebody who knows you well enough, in an official capacity, to write about you and your suitability for higher education. Other entry requirements

Return-to-learn students are those who have had a substantial period away from any formal learning. Often such learners have pursued careers or raised a family. The University understands that students come from many different backgrounds, with varying qualifications, careers and skills, but they often bring to their studies a high degree of motivation and experience.
The University recognises that standard selection measures and procedures may not enable these learners to demonstrate fully their suitability for their chosen course. Where appropriate, admissions officers will seek and consider alternative evidence in order to give such learners equivalent consideration. Where they deem this alternative evidence meets entry criteria fully the learner will not be required to meet the standard academic entry requirements.
