University of Gloucestershire

The University of Gloucester is based in the picturesque Cotswolds and its roots date back to 1834 when it was called the Mechanics Institute, through to 1874 when it was became the Cheltenham Training College. The University of Gloucestershire gained its University status in 2001, and now has over 10,000 students studying from a range of over 120 undergraduate courses and 70 post-graduate courses.

These courses are organised within three different faculties:

  • Media, Arts and Technology
  • Business Education and Professional Studies
  • Applied Sciences

The university has risen 20 places in the Guardian University League tables, from 74th to 54th in the last year, and comes at no surprise when looking at their recent achievements. Creative research has been conducted at a high level in 6 key areas referred to as Research Priority Areas (RPAs), these are:

  • Sport Exercise and well being
  • Environmental dynamics and governance
  • Being human: past, present and future
  • Applied design for business
  • Retail, marketing and management
  • Learning for professional contexts

More than 25% of research submitted to the REF has been recognised as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’.

Around £12 million has been spent recently to invest in new buildings and facilities, with the likes of a new media centre and a strength and conditioning suite being added later this year.

Outside of academic studies students can make amazing memories with the surrounding area of Gloucestershire. If you’re a person who loves the beauty of the countryside but still wants to be part of a vibrant city, the University of Gloucestershire should be near the top of your list! There is enough festivals throughout the year to attend one nearly every week, and a range of excellent venues for you to pick from on your student nights out.

Depending on the facilities, rent for halls of residence at Gloucestershire ranges from £96 per week to £180.
