Our MSc Environmental Management equips you with the knowledge, skills and expertise necessary to make a positive, demonstrable and lasting impact to some of the world’s most urgent and complex environmental challenges. The programme provides a clear route to a fulfilling career within the environmental sector or in related areas where the environment is a key consideration, including business and commerce. With this very flexible Masters course, you have the option of either keeping your learning broad or specialising within one of our four major pathways, each with its own set of core modules:

You will also:

  • Experience exciting field trips to the diverse and topographically varied countryside around Lancaster and beyond. These experiences will enrich your learning and provide valuable real-world insights into the field of environmental management.
  • Develop a deep understanding of essential concepts such as complex systems, collaboration, sustainability, resilience, adaptation, governance, which are all fundamental to working effectively in environmental management.
  • Enhance your ability to think critically about the complex and dynamic nature of environmental issues, enabling you to design, implement and evaluate innovative solutions that can help to improve and re-balance people-environment relations.

What to expect

Our core modules provide you with the conceptual and theoretical foundations needed to succeed in environmental management. You will gain essential knowledge related to environmental legislation and policy, including Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment, ecosystem-based management and adaptive approaches. If you opt for one of our specialised pathways, you will also explore critical aspects related to food security, energy, pollution, or ecology while also having the opportunity to select some additional optional modules. If you decide to embark on a more generalised programme, you will be able to select from our broad portfolio of optional modules and tailor your learning to your interests, exploring areas as diverse as soil science, geoinformatics, coastal erosion and volcanology.

Alongside taught modules, you will complete a substantial dissertation project, giving you the opportunity to apply your learning to a real-world situation or challenge. You will have access to exciting research projects and partnerships with global organizations, enabling you to contribute to environmental management in a meaningful and impactful way. Alternatively, you can opt for a six-month placement with a private sector company, government body, or NGO as a way of further enhancing your experience and employability.
