Located just five minutes away from the centre of York, the University of York was established in 1963 and is one of very few institutions under 60 years of age to have quickly advanced in the world league rankings, with a current THE ranking of 16th in the UK. The university campus has also recently doubled in size.
There are over 30 departments at the University of York, and almost 16,000 students studying courses from a wide range of subjects including biology, mathematics, psychology, English and history. These courses and departments each belong to one of the three faculties at the university.
The three faculties are;
- Faculty of Arts and Humanities
- Faculty of Sciences
- Faculty of Social Sciences
As well as academic studies, the University of York has an active student union with many societies and clubs. There are over 150 student societies from photography to religious groups. Sports are also very popular, with a range of facilities for those who enjoy being active.
The university boasts extensive playing fields and a £10 million sports village complete with a 25m swimming pool, 1km cycle track and plans for a new athletics track. Furthermore, the University of York co-hosts the annual Roses tournament against Lancaster University which is the largest university sports competition in Europe.
