Aberystwyth University was founded in 1872 as The University College of Wales, and became a university of its own right in 2007. The university’s motto is “A world without knowledge is no world at all”. Around 9,000 undergraduates study at the university, alongside 1,800 postgraduates and 3,815 foreign exchange students.

There are over 200 societies and clubs available for students to join through the student union, AberSU - ranging from Cartoons and Comics to Beer Pong. AberSU also host many sports clubs including the likes of Equestrian, Mountaineering, and Snow sports.
Aberystwyth University is not campus based, and its halls of residences are a short walk away from the main campus and the town centre. A new hall of residence is due to open in September 2015 called Fferm Penglais. Accommodation is guaranteed for first year students, and rent start at £3,004 per academic year for the most basic rooms.
