Civil Engineering with Integrated Master's MEng

The Integrated Master's in Civil Engineering at Keele gives you the advanced expertise and professional edge to lead in shaping sustainable cities, resilient infrastructure, and innovative construction. Building on the BEng, the additional master’s year deepens your technical knowledge, expands your research experience, and strengthens your ability to manage complex projects.

Why study Civil Engineering with Integrated Master's at Keele University?

  • Specialise in engineering to a master's level, building key skills to advance your learning
  • Benefit from industry-informed teaching, networking opportunities, and practical learning
  • Develop a range of professional skills including critical thinking, data analysis and evidence-based problem solving
  • Gain industry experience through a work placement year, preparing you for a range of careers
  • Study abroad with an international year to broaden your horizons

Civil engineering addresses the world’s most pressing infrastructure challenges: safe and reliable water supplies, climate-resilient cities, sustainable transport networks, renewable energy systems, and the preservation of our built and natural environments. Combining science, creativity, and problem-solving, Civil Engineers design, construct, and maintain the systems and structures that underpin society. Every project offers the chance to improve lives and contribute to a sustainable, resilient future.

This four-year integrated master’s (MEng) combines undergraduate and postgraduate study in one enhanced degree. You’ll begin with Engineering Fundamentals, building the scientific and technical knowledge to tackle complex problems. Alongside this, Engineering Skills will strengthen your practical ability through labs, workshops, and training in communication and project management, while Engineering Simulation and Mathematics will develop your precision in advanced analysis and modelling. In your fourth year, you will complete master’s-level study, advancing your expertise through specialist modules and a major research project.

Specialist civil engineering study begins with structural analysis, soil mechanics, and fluid mechanics, alongside early exposure to sustainability and digital engineering methods. As you progress, you will learn to address complex applications, including system performance, construction technology, and modelling with building information modelling (BIM) and geographic information systems (GIS). In later years, you will integrate your knowledge to tackle sustainability and circular economy challenges, exploring innovations in structural health monitoring, smart infrastructure, flood and coastal resilience, and low-carbon construction materials.

At master's level, you will take your learning further by exploring contemporary topics in civil engineering, engaging with advanced methods and professional practice. You will be able to choose between two major research projects – either an extended dissertation based at Keele, working on cutting-edge research, or an industry-led project that connects you directly with real-world challenges. This additional year gives you the chance to build deeper expertise, refine your leadership and teamwork skills, and prepare for senior roles in the sector.

Located in the West Midlands, a region renowned for engineering and manufacturing excellence – the programme draws on a strong industrial base. You’ll benefit from industry-informed teaching, networking opportunities, and access to practical experience through local partnerships and initiatives. Professional practice is embedded throughout, preparing you for the workplace with skills in teamwork, ethics and communication. You’ll also grow personally through Professional Challenge Projects based on real industry scenarios – giving you the chance to apply your learning and stand out in a competitive engineering landscape.
