  • Benefit from industry-informed teaching, networking opportunities, and practical learning
  • Build key employability skills including data analysis, critical thinking, and evidence-based problem solving
  • Flexible pathways let you choose an engineering specialism, with the option to exit with a BEng or continue to an MEng
  • Gain industry experience through a work placement year, preparing you for a range of careers
  • Study abroad with an international year to broaden your horizons

Mechatronic engineering combines mechanical, electrical, electronic, and computer systems into intelligent, automated solutions that are transforming industries from advanced manufacturing and robotics to clean energy and autonomous systems. It is a discipline where engineering creativity and technical mastery merge to design systems that are efficient, responsive, and sustainable. Every project you undertake offers the chance to improve performance, reduce environmental impact, and shape the technologies of the future.

This programme is designed to support your development as a professional engineer. You’ll begin with Engineering Fundamentals, gaining the scientific and technical knowledge to tackle complex problems. Alongside this, Engineering Skills will strengthen your practical ability through labs, workshops, and training in communication and project management. Engineering Simulation and Mathematics will then help you apply advanced analysis and modelling techniques, allowing you to understand and present engineering concepts with precision.

From the start of your degree, you will build a foundation in mechanics, materials, electrical circuits, digital electronics, programming, and simulation tools, alongside introductory automation and robotics. Specialist mechatronic study covers statics and dynamics, logic systems, microcontrollers, sensor and actuator integration, CAD, and control systems. As you progress, you will tackle complex applications including system modelling, control theory, advanced manufacturing, and embedded programming. In your final year, you will integrate your knowledge to address sustainability and clean energy challenges, while developing leadership, teamwork, communication, and research skills through an individual research dissertation and a collaborative industry-led design project.

Located in the West Midlands, a region renowned for engineering and manufacturing excellence – the programme draws on a strong industrial base. You’ll benefit from industry-informed teaching, networking opportunities, and access to practical experience through local partnerships and initiatives. Professional practice is embedded throughout, preparing you for the workplace with skills in teamwork, ethics and communication. You’ll also grow personally through Professional Challenge Projects based on real industry scenarios – giving you the chance to apply your learning and stand out in a competitive engineering landscape.

With an emphasis on professional skills, we’ll support your seamless transition into practice, whether through a work placement, international year, secondment, or finding graduate roles in industry. You can also continue your studies at MEng level for an enhanced degree title.
