University of Manchester

The University of Manchester is situated close to the city centre and is a red-brick University formed in 2004 when two former Universities, University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester, merged. The University campus contains both modern and Victorian buildings, with landscaped gardens and plenty of facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Although the University is referred to as a campus university, it is not actually a campus University. There are many university owned buildings in one key area, however, the main residential campus can be found at the Fallowfield Campus, around 2 miles away from the main site.

At Manchester, students can find a vast amount of courses, split into 4 faculties:

  • Medical and Human Sciences
  • Engineering and Physical Sciences
  • Humanities
  • Life Sciences

There are over 40 sports clubs to join at the University, belonging to the Athletic Union, as well as more than 300 student societies to take part in. The student’s union are also responsible for the Manchester Academy; an iconic music venue hosting Pangaea, Europe’s biggest student-led festival, three times a year. Some artists that have performed at the venue are Kyle, Alt-J, Rita Ora, Ms Dynamite, and Foo Fighters.
