Overview

Business and mathematics go hand in hand. If you love maths and want to learn how to use your skills in the business world, this BSc (Hons) Mathematics for Finance and Management degree course can give you the skills, knowledge and practical experience you need.

You'll cover the mathematics of high finance and big business, from the mathematical analysis and modelling professionals use to track investments to the maths managers use to make their budgets work harder.

Mathematicians are in high demand for their analytical skills and systematic, logical thinking. At the end of the course, you'll be set for a career in areas such as finance, marketing, investment analysis, management, government research and mathematical modelling.

What you'll experience

On this course you'll:

  • Have access to our computing labs, harnessing powerful hardware and software to unpick complex mathematical problems
  • Get training in advanced mathematical and statistical software, such as Mathematica, MAPLE, MATLAB, as well as industry standard statistical and operational research software
  • Have the chance to get work experience in the community, such as assisting in local schools

You’ll be assessed through:

  • examinations
  • written coursework
  • multiple-choice tests
  • presentations

You’ll be able to test your skills and knowledge informally before you do assessments that count towards your final mark.

You can get feedback on all practice and formal assessments so you can improve in the future.

The way you’re assessed may depend on the modules you select. As a guide, students on this course last year were typically assessed as follows:

  • Year 1 students: 65% by written exams and 35% by coursework
  • Year 2 students: 55% by written exams, 7% by practical exams and 38% by coursework
  • Year 3 students: 62% by written exams, 2% by practical exams and 36% by coursework

Qualifications or experience

  • 112-128 points to include a minimum of 2 A levels, or equivalent, including Mathematics.

English language requirements

  • English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0 with no component score below 5.5.
