New College of the Humanities

The New College of the Humanities is an innovative liberal-arts university in the heart of Bloomsbury, London.

At NCH we offer personalised humanities degrees where you can choose what you study from a variety of humanities subjects including Philosophy, Politics & IR, History, Economics, English, Law, Art History, Creative Writing and Geography.

Our liberal-arts curriculum means you will study a combined honours degree comprised of a major subject and a complementary minor subject, so you can develop your curiosity in and understanding of more than one subject. Our small class sizes and our one-to-one tutorials offer students the opportunity to develop beyond the lecture by exploring their interests with our world-leading academics. This way, NCH students get both breadth and depth in their learning.

In addition to your degree, studying at NCH means you will also be awarded our unique Diploma, which includes courses in Critical Reasoning, Science Literacy, Practical Ethics, and LAUNCH, a professional development programme designed to equip students with skills for life after NCH.

NCH’s world-class professoriate includes world-leading academics such as Simon Blackburn, Sir Partha Dasgupta, Richard Dawkins, Daniel C Dennett, AC Grayling, Bettany Hughes, Lawrence Krauss, Steven Pinker, Sir Christopher Ricks, Adrian Zuckerman, and many more. This gives our students access to some of the world’s greatest thinkers, which is unparalleled at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Founded just 7 years ago, NCH has earned a reputation as a world-class academic institution that is leading the way in UK higher education. In 2015, The Times described NCH as offering ‘bespoke higher education’ and as being positioned ‘at the forefront of a new era, the academic equivalent of space travel’, with our one-to-one tutorial system giving NCH ‘the edge on even Oxbridge’s one-to-two tutorial system in one crucial way’.

  • Why NCH?

Del, Politics & IR with Philosophy BSc student, on why she chose to study at NCH

One of the many reasons I chose to come to NCH was because students are viewed as a name not a number, unlike many other universities. Highly personalised tutorials with leading academics ensure that you're not only intellectually challenged, but also progress academically, far beyond the reach of the lecture hall and other courses.

The flexibility of the liberal arts course also means that you don't have to sacrifice your love of creative writing or criminal law lectures as we have an open door policy, which is designed to promote all aspects of your curiosity.

In addition to your degree studies, NCH goes above and beyond, preparing you for the real world. The LAUNCH career programme answers market demands of leading companies. Improving your presentation skills, encouraging team building, and providing an introduction into marketing research and data analysis, LAUNCH is a programme unique to NCH and invaluable for life beyond university.

  • NCH combines interests perfectly

Maximilian from Darmstadt, Germany, Economics with English BSc student

I am a literature enthusiast with a mathematical mind. A firm grasp of the world is vital, yet I believe that a full understanding can only be gained through philosophy and the arts. NCH provides this combination of interests perfectly, encouraging me to explore both my interests in a rigorous manner. Additionally, I have the freedom to pursue my hobbies, allowing me to form my own society of trading card games within the college - Had my 12 year olds self known that this is possible, it would probably be laughing right now. This freedom is what I value, and I will continue to explore it.
