Medicines managementdescribes a system of processes and behaviours that determines how medicinesare used by patients and the NHS. Effective medicines management places thepatient as the primary focus of interventions by health care professionals andis a key driver for NHS modernisation in the UK.
The Medway School ofPharmacy's innovative postgraduate distance-learning programme in MedicinesManagement equips healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge tocontribute effectively to medicines management services and to individual drugtherapy decisions in primary and secondary care.
The programme isdelivered by flexible learning and is structured to enable the student toincorporate learning directly into the workplace. The material provided forself-study is designed for use by all health professionals involved inmedicines management and reflects the most recent evidence and practice.
There are two mainpathways to the qualification of MSc Medicines Management. Students can eithertake the PGCert Independent/Supplementary Prescribing and then continue with compulsoryand optional courses reach Diploma level or they can complete optional andcompulsory courses to reach achieve both Certificate and Diploma. A researchproject and dissertation is required to complete the MSc.Regardless of the pathway chosen, course optionsallow students to achieve personal goals within the credit totals for eachstage of the degree. They can thus provide a valuable means of supportingcontinuing professional development or can be used as a training package tosupport service developments in primary or secondary care.
The aims of the programme are:
- To equip health care professionals with the skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to medicines management services and to individual drug therapy decisions in primary and secondary care
- Toincorporate learning directly into the workplace and enable the student to riseto the challenges presented by the new, patient centred NHS.
