Key Features

The PGCE Secondary Art and Design programme at Swansea is a supportive, well organised, carefully structured course which places much emphasis on the use of contemporary Art, including Welsh examples. The course works closely with outside agencies such as the Glynn Vivian Gallery, the National Museum Wales, Artes Mundi, the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Modern and Plantasia Tropical Planthouse. You will also have the opportunity to work as an Artist-In-Residence or gain teaching experience in a museum or gallery for a two week period at the end of the programme to increase your employability.

If Welsh is your first language, you will be able to undertake teaching experience placements in Welsh medium schools, have tutorials in Welsh, and receive Tutor lesson observations and both written and verbal feedback in Welsh.

Our programme is the largest provider of Secondary PGCE education and training in Wales and geographically, we are well placed to serve the whole of South Wales. We have the best employment rate of all teacher training programmes throughout Wales and the course is taught by high quality staff with recent and relevant experience of secondary school provision, providing training for serving teachers, conducting school inspections, working as consultants and with the Welsh Joint Education Committee to set examination papers and moderate pupils? GCSE work in schools.

In addition, we have long established English and Welsh medium partnership placements and very experienced, committed school /college mentors. We are also able to offer post course Continuing Professional Development opportunities.

The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education has excellent graduate employment rates with 99% of graduates going into employment or further study (DLHE 14/15).

Many school and college departments, both locally and nationally, are staffed with several of our teachers and many of our trainees have gone on to forge successful teaching careers at strategic, professional and management levels at home and abroad.

Our PGCE graduates usually remain in close touch with us as they make their careers in the teaching profession and they often become Subject Mentors on the programme. This creates a very strong, sustainable professional network of teachers which is a rich source of continuing professional development.

Further Information

In addition to the course information offered above, you will prepare to teach the National Curriculum for Art and Design at Key Stage 3, and GCSE, AS and A level Art and Design courses which will involve delivering a full and exciting spectrum of creative experiences. The whole of the 36 week period of the course is devoted to developing theoretical and practical subject expertise through school experience placements, workshops, gallery visits and obtaining guidance and experience in planning, delivering and assessing the 11-18 Art and Design curriculum.

Methodology and classroom management also feature prominently within the programme, along with developing a working knowledge of broader educational issues which collectively combine to produce informed, creative, innovative teachers of Art and Design. In addition, emphasis is placed on the job-search process whereby you will gain experience in preparing for an interview for an Art and Design position in a secondary school or college.

You will also be expected to demonstrate exemplary planning and organisational skills, academic rigour, the skill to reflect upon on your performance as a means to improve, professionalism, empathy with young people and an enthusiasm for working co-operatively with others. These are all key attributes which we value, foster and expect from you if you are offered a place on this programme.

If invited to interview you will be required to sit 30 minute English Literacy and Numeracy tests. If you choose to do your studies through the medium of Welsh, you will be expected to sit an additional Welsh Literacy test. You will also be asked to do a portfolio presentation, participate in a group discussion; complete an Art & Design based extended writing exercise and have a formal interview with the Curriculum Leader and school/college mentor.

You will need to demonstrate a passion and enthusiasm for your subject and for teaching.

Entry Requirements For This Course

Entry Criteria

For the September 2015 entry you will need a B grade at GCSE in English and Mathematics and if you intend to follow your course through the medium of Welsh, a C grade in Welsh.

If you hold a C grade in GCSE English Language or Mathematics and are successful in other aspects of the selection process you will be given the opportunity to sit the equivalency test. If you are successful and you accept your place to study with us then you can start your programme as planned. Attendance at the workshops prior to the test is a compulsory part of the equivalency testing programme.

Good GCSE and A level qualifications related to your subject area are generally expected. The normal minimum entry requirement to the programme is a second class honours degree in one of the subject areas offered by the programme or in a strongly cognate discipline. Level 'equivalent' qualifications such as Btec advanced will also be taken into account. Details of particular subject entry requirements can be obtained by contacting the tutor named below.

If accepted onto our course, you will be required to obtain a clear enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service - formerly known as CRB, Criminal Records Bureau) clearance check as soon as possible.

If you are offered an interview, it would be advantageous to have gained some work experience at a secondary school as a means to gain an understanding of the role of a teacher in your subject area and understand the demands that would face you in your chosen career. Recent and relevant experience of working with young people is highly desirable and could include working as a Learning Support Assistant, working in a Pupil Referral Unit, planning and delivering workshops in a school or Youth Club, working as an Artist-In-Residence, doing voluntary work in an Art Department, etc.
