The University was founded in 1901 when it was named Sunderland Technical College, and gained its university status in 1992. Today it has around 19,000 undergraduate students and has a league table ranking of 74 according to the Guardian University League Table Rankings 2019.
The University of Sunderland offer courses in six major areas that are organised into faculties. These faculties are:
- Faculty of Business, Law and Tourism
- Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing
- Faculty of Education and Society
- Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries
- Faculty of Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing
- Faculty of Computer Science
Depending on the faculty your course belongs to you will be based at one of the University's campuses: The Sir Tom Cowie campus is located by the sea in Sunderland, and the City Campus is located in the city centre. The University also has a campus in London near Canary Wharf, and a new campus in Hong Kong.
The University have four halls of residences that are based within a 1.5 mile radius of the city centre making it easily accessible for students. The largest hall is Clanny House, with over 600 single study bedrooms. It is just 1 mile from the city centre campus with regular buses running to and from the University campus. To live in Clanny House it can cost between £72.11 and £85.11 per week depending on the room size you choose. Facilities in each flat include a shared bathroom and shared kitchen, 50Mbps internet, free parking, free personal possessions insurance and 24/7 on-call security.
