Welcome to the University of Surrey, a global community of more than 16,000 students with over a third from outside the UK.
Surrey is more than just a university, we’re a global community of ideas and people dedicated to life changing education and research. That’s where you come in.
We’re based in the popular town of Guildford, just 35 minutes from central London by train, surrounded by beautiful countryside with acres of green land and forests for walking or cycling. Heathrow and Gatwick airports are both under an hour away.
Our main campus is located on Stag Hill, close to the town centre of Guildford and next to Guildford Cathedral. It’s a lovely, leafy campus full of space to relax, as well as most of our student facilities.
We have a second campus, at Manor Park, a short distance away, which is home to the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, Surrey Sports Park and lots more accommodation.
Our three faculties offer a number of undergraduate courses, all of which have flexibility to personalise your degree to your interests and goals.
Our goal is to provide a challenging and rewarding university experience that creates incredible memories and helps you achieve your ambitions, while building friendships and connections that will last a lifetime.
What’s New
Surrey came 4th in the UK National Student Survey 2023 with an overall satisfaction score of 85.3 per cent*. Better still, we keep moving up.
We’ve made big progress on the biggest issue: sustainability. We’ve committed to being a net-zero emissions university by 2030 and, along with the Students’ Union, are making large and small changes to every aspect of campus life.
Teaching Quality
At Surrey, you’ll learn from academics who are experts in their fields. Many remain active in their professions, and because they’re always developing their knowledge, they’ll teach you the most up-to-date information you need to know to help you get started in your career.
Surrey also stands out for its commitment to practice-based learning. We have a huge range of professional-standard facilities, such as labs, workshops and studios, where you can develop your skills and learn by doing.
In addition, across the campus you’ll find amazing simulation facilities: a fully operational pilot process plant, wind tunnels, flight simulators, a courtroom and a Clinical Simulation Centre, home to our Immersive Learning Environment that’ll transport you to the centre of clinical scenarios. These provide a safe, supervised environment to put your skills and knowledge to the test.
We also focus on interdisciplinary learning, encouraging students to take a broad perspective and learn from and with their peers.
It’s an approach that has proved its worth across all our departments and faculties. We consistently rank in the top ten of the UK for a wide range of courses, from Veterinary Medicine to Iberian Languages and Manufacturing and Production Engineering. Take a look at our latest rankings on our website: https://www.surrey.ac.uk/about/facts/rankings-and-league-tables.
Facilities
Across all our departments, you’ll benefit from fantastic facilities for group learning, advanced research and private study. Psychology students, for instance, can conduct experiments in dedicated labs, featuring a virtual reality suite. Language students can practise in dedicated simultaneous interpreting labs, equipped with ISO-certified tools that are commonly used for major multilingual events.
And students in our School of Hospitality and Tourism Management have the real-life Lakeside restaurant where they can test their culinary skills and management ability – while the rest of us can enjoy the fabulous food at great prices!
That’s just one of the great choices of places to eat, drink and hang out across our gorgeous green campus. As well as a wide choice of shops and cafes, there are also facilities like The Snug, a bookable student space with huge comfy sofas, an 85” screen and PlayStation.
Looking for somewhere quieter? No problem. As well as the Library and Learning Centre, which is open 7 days a week, there are dedicated quiet areas, like MySurrey Nest, where you can plug in or switch off.
Student support comes through MySurrey Hive, plus an on-campus medical practice and the Centre for Wellbeing. For those wanting a more active lifestyle, the campus is also home to the Surrey Sports Park, 50-metre swimming pool, 120-station gym, and a host of playing fields and courts.
With so much happening on campus, it’s easy to see why so many students want to live here. There are more than 6,000 study-bedrooms on campus, at least half of which have an en-suite shower and toilet. There are choices to suit all budgets and requirements and you’re guaranteed university accommodation in your first year as long as your application arrives on time.
Scholarships & Funding
We offer a number of merit-based and means-tested awards to eligible students. Find out more on our website: https://www.surrey.ac.uk/fees-and-funding/scholarships-and-bursaries.
Services for International Students
International students have access to support from the University of Surrey from the moment they decide to apply all the way until after they graduate. This includes:
- Online student portal – MySurrey allows students to access support and advice at any hour of the day. You can also see someone in person via the MySurrey Hive.
- Faith support – the university is a multi-faith and multi-cultural community, so you’ll find space and support whatever your faith.
- Study support – services here range from personal tutoring to booking study spaces, resources, and language support.
- Careers support – students can find help with jobs, work placements and more by using the resources available.
- Students’ Union – though many people know it best for its events and activities, the SU is also there to represent students and provide support with academic issues, accommodation and more.
We have a dedicated team available to help international students throughout the application process – from advising on choosing the right course to applying for a visa and preparing for your first few weeks at Surrey. They can even welcome you when you arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick Airport (both less than 45 minutes from Guildford).
Student Support
Whether you need support with your learning, guidance on careers or a friendly ear and practical advice for day-to-day issues, we’ve got you covered. Surrey provides a wide range of student support services, for more information please visit our website: https://www.surrey.ac.uk/student-support.
Student Safety
The safety of our students matters – whether you’re on campus, on placements or out in our town. We provide students with advice, guidance and support to keep you safe. On campus, you’ll find our dedicated security team on regular patrol; they are friendly and approachable and there to respond in an emergency. They also monitor all our student accommodation 24/7.
Teams are trained in First Aid at Work, and staff are prepared for situations if students have specific needs. They can use defibrillators and work alongside emergency services and external support teams with the Centre for Wellbeing.
Graduate Outcomes
Surrey graduates are employable! Don’t just take our word for it: The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide for 2022 awarded us University of the Year for Graduate Employment, and 95% of our graduates in work or further study after graduating (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2023).
This performance is a combination of talented and hard-working students, and our commitment to helping you get the best work experience and careers advice while you are here.
We were the first university in the UK to introduce professional training placements as part of an undergraduate degree. Today, almost all Surrey undergraduates are given the opportunity to do an industry placement – increasing their employability and networks and making sure they are prepared for the world of work.
We have established relationships with more than 2,300 partner organisations, including well-known companies like Oracle, the Walt Disney Company and Airbus, providing a huge range of placement opportunities.
